The University of Michigan Dearborn Colony of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity was
founded on March 12th, 1987. The foundering members first met with Allen James
on January 30th, 1987 at the Dearborn Hyatt Regency to discuss the formation of
a social fraternity on campus. Within a week of the meeting the decision to
begin a colony was made and on February 10th, 1987. A pledge ceremony was held
at the Gabriel Richard Center on campus.
With the formal initiation of the founding fathers, plans were made for a Spring
Rush. The rush proved successful and culminated with nineteen pledges being
formally initiated on May 19th, 1987.
The Colony was active throughout its operation. Proof of this was seen in the
numerous activities that the Colony held throughout the first summer. Some of
the activities included a picnic and softball game at Hines Park, a formal
evening, a weekend canoe, and a weekend trip to Chicago. The formal entailed an
evening cruise down the Detroit River on the 70' cruiser "Oldtimer". Winning
Greek Week and participating in a local softball league demonstrated the
Colony's strong involvement in athletics. The Colony also held bi-weekly
meeting throughout the summer to plan for the upcoming year.
On November 4th, 1987 the Colony received its charter and was founded as the
Eta Kappa Chapter of Delta Sigma Phi.
